SFUMATO or The Da Vinci Code and the series Lucifer on Netflix

SFUMATO - smoky

Perfect precision, obscured, blurred by a smoke veil on the surface.

This article - The Da Vinci Code Deciphered, helped me to decipher, to express what I have been trying to do for a long time.

The series Lucifer on Netflix prompted me to do this inner research. What I had inside me in feelings, but I couldn't capture in words, is in this article. It's the word SFUMATO - smoky and it has a connection with Da Vinci's work, with his paintings. With their precise execution (because he was precise), but also with their subsequent blurring, haziness, smoke. That's the bonus, the mystery, the superstructure that inspires us (that is, those who want and those who allow themselves :-D ) in his paintings. And he achieved this in his work by not finishing his paintings... he left them as if they were still in progress. Can there be anything more inspiring to the viewer than this? No, it's just brilliant.

"Certainty is more certain when it is uncertain. Precision is more precise when it is imprecise." Fuzzy

"No text should be trusted. No image. However, an image that admits and integrates such blurriness, haziness, is even stronger, Da Vinci understood... is even more captivating."

"Where there is smoke, it is possible to reject the dictates of precision, the dictates of form, the dictates of a creator declared to be a god and a substitute god."

In this article, this is beautifully described, and also about Da Vinci's unfinished paintings.

"Da Vinci figured out that the most interesting and refreshing mistake is incompleteness. Unresolved."

"The essential need not be finished. It cannot. It should not. The essential is non finito. Davinci."

The series Lucifer (although this is rarely the case with series) seems to me to be very well formed in all aspects, in terms of screenwriting, acting, scenography and also musically (the music is not only used to complete the atmosphere of the events, but plays an essential role. Music is the language of our soul and that's why the creators of the series left her a really big space). As SFUMÁTO, I see humor in the series, which masks and lightens the deep psychological line that runs through all parts of the series. It is through humor that we can allow ourselves to reach depths (and heights) where we would not otherwise dare. Humor can set up a mirror or a different point of view. Humor is a perfect crutch and can lighten things up, but not lighten things up. It can release us from the constriction of reason, air out the staleness in us from its angularity... from its apparent logic, reasonableness. Here, humor intertwines tragic and highly emotional developmental situations... Humor is like a catalyst for events.

Another "unsharpness" is the authors of the unexplained supernatural plot, which may appear as imperfection, incompleteness, a mistake of the authors of the script or the creators of the series, but this is exactly what I find refreshing and inspiring. I have the impression that it is beautiful not to know everything, it also gives space to our creative imagination and teaches us to believe. To believe that what we are supposed to know, we will know for sure and at the right time. If everything were explained here in complete detail, then the work would lose its spaciousness, pollen, juiciness and thus deprive us of the adventure of the mystery. And the fact that there is "supernatural" in the series is also a beautiful blur, but on the other hand, it gives the creators of the series more opportunities, space to express the psychological essence of the work.

The series is not only exciting and with a beautiful love story, but it is also playful and funny, so it playfully presents us with deep and essential life wisdom for our understanding, and that really non-violently. Even our ordinary life teaches us, both funny and tragic situations that are put in our way. However, we often fail to learn, we fail to decipher life's messages, because their revelation can be painful for us, and so we keep going round in circles. In this series, we can see and get to know "ourselves," our blocks and fears from a distance... that is, more legibly, unencumbered by ourselves. We have the opportunity to understand, feel and unblock ourselves. Just as none of us is only "good" or "bad," the characters in this series are not black and white either, there is a lot of humanity and layering in them. It teaches us not to judge, but to accept...to calm down in a peaceful and deep understanding

Some viewers may even create additional smoke themselves by the fact that the series may seem superficial to them due to their judgments and various prejudices they have experienced. But then they may not have the chance to see the emotional psychological essence of this work, which reveals the simple and essential truths of life. In this case, however, this blurring is not creative, but degrading. On the other hand, even this viewer can like Lucifer, because this serial effort has many layers in it, and even if it does not reveal, and thus does not appreciate, all the layers, it can still enjoy beautiful moments with this series.

And the end of the series? In it too we can see Da Vinci's non finito... and that is absolutely brilliantly conceived.

Elisabeth.
